Native American Artifacts & Hot Wheels
Lot 468:
Copy of B.W. Stephens Catalog 1897-1971
Copy of B.W. Stephens Catalog. Considered one of the biggest collectors of artifacts in Illinois over the past century this book is a record kept by B.W. Stephens of what he bought, how much he paid and who he bought and sold to. A very good book for the serious collector of higher end artifacts. This book shows the close relationship between reproduction makers midcentury and the more prominent collectors of the time. The B Guthrie annotations refer to the late Billy Guthrie of Nebo, Illinois. Billy was and to this day is still considered the best maker of bannerstones, birdstones and other artistic Indian reproductions midcentury in the United States. The G Johns refers to the late Gene Johns who was for many decades the biggest seller of modern reproductions in the United States. Gene got many good old pieces as well so that isn’t a for sure tell on annotations in the book. Having known several of the collectors in the book it is enlightening to see the distribution and acquisition between these collectors of a bygone era. There are very few folks in this book still alive today.
