1854 Hand Painted Native American Red Jacket Indian Chief Lithograph. Red Jacket, also known as Otetiani in his youth and Sagoyewatha as an adult, was a prominent Seneca chief and orator of the Wolf clan. Born around 1750 in what is now New York, he became a key figure in negotiations between the Seneca people and the United States after the American Revolutionary War. His English name, "Red Jacket, " came from the red coats he wore while supporting the British during the war.Renowned for his eloquence, Red Jacket delivered powerful speeches advocating for the rights and traditions of his people. One of his most famous speeches, "Religion for the White Man and the Red, " was a response to Christian missionaries, emphasizing the importance of respecting Native American beliefs.Despite his public opposition to land sales, Red Jacket secretly signed treaties that ceded Native lands, a decision that caused tension within his community. Later in life, he struggled with issues like alcohol but remained a symbol of resistance against cultural assimilation. Professionally framed. Frame measures 13 3/4" by 11 1/8"
