Archaeocidaris illinoisensis, a spiny sea urchin from the Mississippian period. These echinoids are part of the extinct genus Archaeocidaris, which lived from the Late Devonian to the Late Permian and are often found in limestone formations across North America. The species illinoisensis is especially known from the St. Louis Formation in Missouri, where it’s often found alongside Archaeocidaris wortheni in fossil slabs. These urchins had prominent spines and a distinctive radial symmetry, making them a favorite among fossil collectors. This specimen measures 2 3/4" by 1 3/4" by 1/8" thick approximately.
