1800's Lithograph by Draumier - French Political Satire
Created by Honoré Daumier in 1850 and published in the French satirical newspaper Le Charivari, this lithograph illustrates the political pressures faced by King Otto of Greece, who ascended the throne as a child following the establishment of the modern Greek kingdom after independence from the Ottoman Empire. In the print, the young king is shown being tugged between an English officer and a Russian officer, symbolizing the diplomatic and financial pressures from foreign powers. Daumier’s satirical works and political cartoons were a significant feature of this publication during the 19th century. Daumier’s illustrations often critiqued the political and social issues of his time, making him a notable figure in the world of journalism and art. Nicely protected on a clear plastic covered slip case/board. Has a little age toning mainly along the edges. An original from the period still very frame worthy. 14 3/8" by 9 3/4" approximately.
