Tsukioka Yoshitoshi Manga (Cartoons) - Edo or Early Meiji Period Japanese Woodblock Print
Tsukioka Yoshitoshi (1839–1892) was a Japanese woodblock printmaker widely regarded as the last great master of the ukiyo?e tradition. His career straddled two worlds – the final years of the Edo period, when samurai culture and traditional arts still dominated and the rapidly modernizing Meiji era, when Western influence transformed Japanese society. This woodblock print tells a story which may have been for entertainment or educational purposes. It measures 14 1/4" by 9 1/2" approximately. From the Chuck and Eileen Hoffman Collection who spent time in Japan as overseas school teachers.
