Buyer's premium:

Carved wooden devotional figure with remnants of original gesso and polychrome, attributed to the Spanish Colonial tradition of the Cusco region of Peru. The figure is rendered in a traditional robed form with hands positioned forward, showing the simplified yet expressive carving style associated with early Andean religious sculpture. Thick gesso layers and traces of white and reddish brown pigment remain across the surface, with age related losses revealing the underlying hand tooled wood. The piece exhibits significant, honest wear consistent with great age, including a small old chip to the nose and surface abrasions typical of centuries old devotional artifacts. Solid flat back construction, deep oxidation, and the surviving paint stratification all support a broad dating to the 16th–18th century Spanish Colonial period.

Provenance: Ex Douglas Graham Collection.

A compelling and atmospheric example of early Andean devotional art.
