Buyer's premium:

A large and impressive Pre-Columbian terracotta effigy vessel attributed to the Tiahuanaco (Tiwanaku) cultural sphere, dating roughly between 400 BCE and 1100 CE. This substantial hand modeled piece is formed in the shape of a quadruped creature, rendered with bold sculptural features and a hollow body that functions as a container. The animal is shown standing on four sturdy legs, with a raised tail and an expressive head featuring an open mouth, upright ears, and strong facial modeling typical of highland Andean ceramic traditions.

The vessel is constructed from dense, well fired terracotta with a warm reddish brown surface, showing the characteristic texture and mineral inclusions associated with ancient Andean ceramics. The sculptural form reflects the Tiwanaku emphasis on stylized animal imagery, often associated with ritual, symbolic, or ceremonial functions. Effigy vessels of this type may have served as offerings, ritual containers, or prestige items within elite or ceremonial contexts.

Ex Jim Butler Collection. Butler spent much of the late 20th century working alongside archaeologists in Peru and Bolivia, and his collection is well regarded for its authenticity and field sourced material.

A substantial example, the vessel measures approximately 15 3/8 inches long, 9 1/4 inches tall, and 6 inches wide. Its size, sculptural presence, and strong cultural associations make it a standout piece of ancient Andean ceramic art.
