Keokuk Axe - Speckled Granite, 7 1/4", 4 lbs 2 oz, Ex?Chuck Asher Collection
This is a classic Keokuk Axe, expertly shaped from a dense speckled granite. The coarse crystalline texture and mottled coloration are characteristic of the high quality hardstone preferred for these robust utilitarian tools. The axe measures approximately 7 1/4 inches long and weighs 4 pounds 2 ounces, giving it the substantial heft expected of authentic Keokuk forms. The bit is well shaped, and the poll shows the smooth rounding typical of long term use and careful grinding. The overall workmanship reflects the durable functional design associated with Archaic period ground stone axes of the Midwest.
This piece comes from the late Chuck Asher Collection, a respected name among Midwestern artifact collectors. Asher’s material is well known for quality, authenticity, and long held provenance. His collection included many strong examples of classic regional tool types, and this axe fits well within that tradition.
Made from speckled granite, a coarse grained igneous stone valued for its strength and durability, the axe displays visible mineral inclusions and a crystalline structure consistent with traditional Keokuk Axe manufacture. The material choice and shaping style align with known examples from Missouri and the surrounding region.
Keokuk Axes are a staple of Midwestern prehistoric tool traditions, prized for their weight, durability, and distinctive shaping. This example’s size, material, and provenance make it an excellent addition to any collection of ground stone tools. The form, workmanship, and surface wear all support authentic prehistoric manufacture and long term use.
