Buyer's premium:

WWI hand colored portrait of a British or Commonwealth Lance Corporal hand colored silver gelatin photograph on original mount circa 1914 to 1920

A compelling and well preserved World War I era studio portrait depicting a British or Commonwealth soldier seated in formal Service Dress holding his regulation cap

The photograph has been delicately hand colored in the period style with subtle tinting applied to the face uniform and cap to enhance realism a hallmark of early 20th century portrait studios

The sitter wears the standard 1902 pattern khaki Service Dress tunic identifiable by its high stand and fall collar shoulder straps and brass buttons

Two downward pointing chevrons on the lower sleeve clearly denote the rank of Lance Corporal a junior non commissioned officer position typically awarded to capable enlisted men entrusted with small unit leadership

The cap badge surmounted by a crown above a circular device is consistent with British and Commonwealth regimental insignia of the WWI period

The photograph remains mounted on its original backing board showing age appropriate toning foxing and pigment transfer consistent with authentic hand tinted prints of the era

This was in a very old plain frame which we removed to make shipping without damage easier no glass
