Late 19th Century Dayak (Borneo) Carved Wooden Figure - 7"
A hand carved wooden figure attributed to the Dayak peoples of Borneo dating to the late 19th century. The carving is executed in a traditional village style with a cylindrical body minimal facial features a simple headpiece and a rounded non flat base. The figure measures approximately 7 inches in height. The wood displays deep natural oxidation softened edges and the tactile smoothness that develops only through long handling and age suggesting it was carved from an older piece of hardwood commonly used in Dayak communities.
Dayak use in daily life late 1800s. In the late 19th century small wooden figures like this were part of everyday Dayak life. They were not made for display but served as personal or household objects often kept in baskets tucked into rafters or carried in pouches. Such figures could represent ancestors protective spirits or symbolic human forms meant to maintain balance and well being within the longhouse. Their purpose varied by community but they were typically understood as quiet companions to daily life objects that absorbed touch travel and time. The rounded base reflects this practical use. These figures were not intended to stand but to be held carried or stored among personal belongings.
The carving retains the direct knife cut technique characteristic of traditional Dayak work prior to the rise of commercial carving in the 20th century. Its simplicity lack of decorative embellishment and honest wear all support a date in the late 1800s before stylistic changes associated with missionary influence and later tourist production.
