Lot 90:
6" Granite Full-Groove Axe - Found Near Rock Island, Illinois - Ex James Shields Collection
This 6-inch full-groove axe is made from coarse multi-mineral granite and shows correct peck-and-grind manufacture with fracture-based pecking, grain-boundary breakage, preserved micro-steps, and a matte grinding polish that retains natural texture. The groove displays irregular pecking and rounded shoulders with no machine striations or modern resurfacing. The bit shows the correct granite edge radius of approximately 2 to 3 mm formed by grain-boundary fracture rather than abrasion. Patination is mineral-correct and evenly developed across high and low surfaces with dulled feldspar, matte quartz, and weathered biotite. Found near Rock Island, Illinois. Ex James Shields Collection. Being a very attractive stone we took additional photos for surface analysis and shared them with the photos.
