Extinct Eastern Elk Skull Fossil w/ Horn Nubs found in SW Iowa
Extinct Eastern Elk Skull w/ Horn Nubs. This elk would have died in the late winter to early spring given its lack of horns. They shed them annually. It washed out of a river bank where an ancient lake bed once stood. Where it was found many extinct species of fossils are found. The last reported live elk in Iowa was in 1871. What little that is known about this race of elk has been gleaned from remains and historical references. It measures 8 1/8" tall and 7 3/4" long
