Chavin Culture Anthropomorphic Stone Sculpture 900 BCE to 200 BCE. It is sometimes hard to tell the difference between Chavin and Recuay Cultures. Recuay preceded Chavin culture and contributed greatly to the artistry found in Chavin Culture. The Chavin culture is renowned for its intricate stone sculptures. These sculptures often depict powerful deities and mythical creatures, reflecting the spiritual beliefs of the Chavin people. This stone sculpture or statue is 5 7/8" tall, 3 1/4" wide and 3 1/2" from front to back approximately. This came from an undisclosed estate in Maryland. It exhibits correct manufacture and excellent patination. There is writing on the base which appears to be site or cataloguing information. Likely an ex Museum piece. Good old piece in excellent condition.
