Lot 108:
16th-18th Century Hand Carved Wood Corpus of Jesus Christ
16th-18th Century Hand Carved Wood Corpus of Jesus Christ. Extremely well made with extremely old nail in the feet. The nail is a baroque clasp style Spanish-Italian hand-wrought with irregular shapes that has a square cross section and tapered point. Baroque nails were made in the 16th to 18th Century. Very good patination. The patination and the nail make it easy to determine this is a very old piece of work. The arms appear to be faceted at the shoulders likely by two sided nails. This Jesus Carving is from the same collection as the Kero Cups in the previous 3 lots so is likely from Spanish-Colonial Peru where Catholicism was introduced in the 1600’s but very well could have been made before that and traveled with the early Spaniards that came to the New World. One odd thing about this piece is the lack of a crown of thorns. At one time a separate piece likely sat on his head. Condition of this piece is extremely good for its age. It measures 10 1/2" Tall and just under 8" wide.
Condition: Ancient Authentic
