Jeli Ngoni West African Tribal Lute – Mid Century or Older Also known as the djeli ngoni, this lute is played by the jelis. The body is covered with goat (or some other animal) skin, similar to a drum, and the strings are strung over a bridge and tensioned by leather straps. Jeli ngoni is played by griots at celebrations and special occasions in traditional songs called fasa s in Mandingo. This lute has two bone picks strapped to leather cordage and the strings appear to be sinew. It still makes good sound with the two longer strings that are taught. It has a cloth neck belt that is likely not the original to the instrument and in place for hanging on a wall. The wood is uncracked with hand polish to the wood from use where it was often held while played. Very nice old African tribal musical instrument. It measures about 34 1/2" long.
