Amazing 13" Silver Ethiopian Processional Coptic Cross with Hand Painted Scene of Mary Holding Jesus
Amazing 13" Silver Ethiopian Processional Cross with Hand Painted Scene of Mary Holding Jesus with Joseph, 2 Angels, and 1 other religious figure. The center panel has 2 French style doors that when opened reveal the painting. Appears to have repair welding in 2 places shown in pictures. Ethiopians used to melt their currency to make these crosses and the percent silver in the coins was The Coptic crosses, deeply revered in the Ethiopian Orthodox Church, have a rich history and unique designs. These crosses were historically made from various materials, including wood, bone, and leather. However, as silver became more available in Ethiopia during the 19th century, the creation of crosses increased. They were generally made from melted Austrian Thalers, which contained a regulated and constant content mixture of 83.3% silver and 16.6% copper. This cross would have been a sight to behold as the Catholic procession went down the city or village streets stopping door to door to convert their brethren. This cross would have stood on a long pole hovering above the crowd. It measures 13" tall and 5 1/2" wide with doors closed.
