18 1/2" Ashante Fertility Hand Carved Wood Doll
Also known as Akuab, is a traditional symbol from Ghana, crafted by the Ashanti people. The doll has a distinctive round head, symbolizing the womb and sometimes considered a representation of a moon goddess. The body is shaped like a cross, similar to the kamitic symbol Djed, which represents stability and health. Traditionally, young women would wear the doll on their backs, hoping to conceive a child or ensure the health of their current pregnancy. The doll is treated with care, washed, dressed, and even fed as if it were a real child. The high forehead and long neck of the doll are symbols of beauty and the neck ring represents folds caused by fat, indicating health. The doll is believed to bring fertility and good luck. 18 1/2" Long and 7 1/4" Wide.
