African Senufo Wood Stool
A Traditional piece from the Senufo people, an ethnic group residing in parts of Ivory Coast, Mali, and Burkina Faso. Typically carved from a single piece of wood, often using indigenous hardwoods. The stool usually has a crescent-shaped seat which symbolizes the mother’s embrace, and a flat base. The legs or columns are intricately carved with geometric patterns, animal motifs, and symbolic imagery. The stools are used in various ceremonies and rituals, such as initiations, funerals, and harvest festivals. They are considered sacred objects and are often used as thrones for chiefs and elders. The carvings often represent deities, ancestors, or spiritual forces, and the stool is believed to serve as a link between the physical and spiritual realms. The design and size of the stool can also indicate the status and authority of the owner. 7 1/4" Tall and 10 1/8" Wide.
