Burkina Faso Mossi "Biiga" Doll
Hand carved by the Mossi People of Burkina Faso. The doll represents an adult woman with distinct facial features, elaborate hairstyles, and mature female breasts, symbolizing motherhood. It may also have incised lines representing body scarification. Given to young girls for play and educational purpose, the doll is treated as a child, being fed, washed, and groomed. It is often carried on the girl’s back or tucked into her waistband. The doll symbolizes fertility and teaches girls how to care for their future children. It is also used in rituals associated with motherhood and marriage. 15 5/8" Tall and 4 3/4" wide.
