Lot 228:
Historic Catlinite Unfinished 2" Pipe Bowl.
Catlinite, also known as pipestone, is a form of argillite clay with a high iron content that gives it a deep red to pale orange color. . It’s considered sacred by many Native American tribes, and it’s used to carve ceremonial objects, primarily pipes. . The catlinite pipe bowl can be crafted into different shapes, such as a simple L or T shape, or intricate carvings of effigies or other symbols. . The pipes often consist of a separate wooden stem made of alder or ash. Catlinite is relatively easy to carve because it lacks quartz. . The most notable quarries for this material are located at Pipestone National Monument in Minnesota. . The catlinite pipe bowls are often polished for a high gloss finish and may feature decorative bands, speckles, or two-tone coloration.
