Extinct Occidentalis Bison Skull found in SW Iowa. Bison occidentalis is an extinct species of bison that lived in North America, in continental Eurasia and the Japanese archipelago from about 11,700 to 5,000 years ago, spanning the end of the Pleistocene to the mid-Holocene. This specimen was found washed out in a river where it cut in to an ancient lake bed. It measures 24" from tip end to tip end. If both horns were intact on this specimen it would have measured 27" to 28"
