Original 1874 Utagawa Yoshiiku Japanese Woodblock Print - Meiji Period
Original 1874 Yoshiiku Japanese Woodblock Print "A Mother Who Died Giving Birth Returns as a Spirit During Bon". Utagawa Yoshiiku (1833-1904), also known as Ochiai Yoshiiku, was a Japanese woodblock print artist of the Utagawa school. He became a student of the famous ukiyo-e artist Utagawa Kuniyoshi and is best known for his illustrations for the Tokyo Nichi Nichi Shimbun (Tokyo Daily News) from 1874 to 1876. Yoshiiku"s works include a variety of subjects, such as kabuki actor portraits, beauties, warriors, and satirical pieces. This woodblock has a certifcation seal by S. M. Shiba Miyanoshita. It measures 14 1/4" by 9 3/4" approximately. Very good condition for its age. Has some age toning with minor edge tattering.
