17" Mid-Century or Older Benin Warrior Bronze Statue - Old African Bronze
17" Mid-Century or Older Benin Warrior Bronze Statue. 20th Century or older. Excellent condition with patination as shown in photos. Benin Bronze sculptures are magnificent works of art created by the Edo people of the Kingdom of Benin (modern-day Nigeria). These bronze and brass plaques, statues, and other artworks date back to at least the 13th century and are renowned for their intricate craftsmanship and historical significance. The sculptures often depict scenes of court life, war, and mythology, featuring Obas (kings), warriors, and other figures in detailed regalia. Many Benin Bronzes were looted during the British punitive expedition of 1897 and are now scattered across museums and private collections worldwide. Today, the production of new Benin Bronzes in Nigeria is not as common as it once was, but there are still artisans who practice traditional bronze casting techniques. This is from the Chuck and Eileen Hoffman Collection. They traveled the world gathering interesting artifacts and art everywhere they were stationed during the second half of the 20th centiry.
