Pre-Columbian Mayan Monte Alban Incense Burner
Pre-Columbian Mayan Monte Alban Incense Burner. Outstanding figural pottery vessel. The phrase "ante Xibalba" can be translated as "before Xibalba." In Maya mythology, Xibalba is the name of the underworld, often translated as the "Place of Fright". It was believed to be ruled by death gods and their helpers, and it held a significant place in the Maya imagination as a realm of terror. Excellent condition with only minor stress fractures. It measures 9 3/8" tall by 7" by 6" approximately. Ex Axel Trangott of Florida Collection.
