Lot 240:
20" Extinct Ancient Bison Bison Skull found in Iowa
The Ancient Bison Bison went extinct in Iowa around 700 years ago in SW Iowa. The American Bison or Buffalo were last seen in the 1860’s. There is a distinct difference between the modern buffalo and the Ancient Bison Bison that can be seen in comparison. The buffalo horn sizes of today are significantly smaller. This skull washed out in an area where the extinct Occidentalis Bison (Giant Bison) is also found so it is really hard to put a date on without carbon dating. The Buffalo roamed Iowa in vast herds for thousands of years often dying in bogs or near streams where their skeletons would be deposited and today on occasion wash out of a river bank where someone finds them. This buffalo could have lived in the mid eighteen hundreds up to many thousands of years ago. It has very nice patination which suggests it is a very old one. From tip to tip this bison skull measures 20"
