19th Century Tibetan Temple Tanka of Mahakala
Simply Amazing are the only words that describe this work of art. The Tanka measures 17" x 24". Frame measures 27" x 34". A Mahakala Thangka is a traditional Tibetan painting that depicts the deity Mahakala in his wrathful aspect. Mahakala is often shown as a fearsome figure with dark blue or black skin, bulging eyes, and a crown of skulls on his head. He may also have a beard and long, flowing hair, and is often depicted holding various ritual objects or weapons such as a vajra or a trident. Despite his intimidating appearance, Mahakala is revered as a protector of the Buddhist teachings and is invoked for protection and to overcome obstacles on the spiritual path. The Thangka itself is typically painted or embroidered on silk or canvas and may be adorned with gold and other precious materials. Mahakala Thangkas are used as aids for meditation and ritual practices in Tibetan Buddhism. They are often displayed in monasteries and temples or kept in private homes for personal devotion. The presence of a Mahakala Thangka is believed to bring protection and spiritual guidance to those who venerate it.
