Original 1830 Shunkosai Hokushu Japanese Wood Block Print - Edo Period
Circa 1830 Shunkosai Hokushu, Ichikawa Haukuen II as Saeda Masazaemon. Shunkosai Hokushu was an early ukiyo-e artist from the Osaka School, active from about 1802 to 1832. He is known for his woodblock prints, often featuring kabuki actors and other popular subjects of the time. One of his notable works includes a diptych print of kabuki actors Nakamura Utaemon III and Asao Yujiro, published by Tenmaya Kihei in 1822. Has discoloration along the edges with pin holes and corner tare as shown in photos. Measures 15 3/8" by 10 1/8" Tokugawa shogunate, also known as the Edo period. This was a time of relative peace and stability, but also of isolation from much of the outside world under the policy of Sakoku. The Tokugawa shogunate lasted from 1603 to 1868.
