Original 1810 Shuntei Katsukawa Japanese Wood Block Print - Edo Period
1810 Shuntei Katsukawa Wood Block Print. Katsukawa Shuntei (1770-1820) was a Japanese woodblock print artist from the Edo period. He was a pupil of Shun’ei and a member of the Katsukawa School. Shuntei is known for his prints of battle scenes, warriors, kabuki actors, and sumo wrestlers. He also produced some surimono (lavishly printed, privately-commissioned prints) and illustrations for popular books. Good condition with age toning as shown in photos. 13 3/4" by 8 7/8" approximately. Tokugawa shogunate, also known as the Edo period. This was a time of relative peace and stability, but also of isolation from much of the outside world under the policy of Sakoku. The Tokugawa shogunate lasted from 1603 to 1868.
