Original 1843 Utagawa Kunisada – Utagawa Toyokuni III Japanese Block Print – Edo Period. Actor Nakamura Kanjaku II. Nakamura Kanjaku II was a kabuki actor who performed in Japan during the mid-19th century. He was particularly active from 1834 to 1861. There are several notable block prints featuring him, including a memorial portrait by Utagawa Kunisada I (Toyokuni III) created in 1861. The face in the top right is a match for Toyokuni’s artistry portraying Nakamura Kanjaku II. Circa 1940’s wood block print. Age toning otherwise in good condition for its age as shown in photos. Measures 13 7/8" by 9 7/8". Tokugawa shogunate, also known as the Edo period. This was a time of relative peace and stability, but also of isolation from much of the outside world under the policy of Sakoku. The Tokugawa shogunate lasted from 1603 to 1868.
