Dogon Hand Crafted Ngoni (Lute) - Mid Century or Older
The Dogon three-stringed lute, also known as the Ngoni. This traditional instrument is made from a hollowed-out piece of wood, covered with animal skin, and features three strings that are typically plucked. The Ngoni is used in various ceremonies and cultural events, producing a distinctive sound that is integral to Dogon music. It’s construction and playing style have been passed down through generations, making it a significant part of Dogon cultural identity. The maker of this instrument went above and beyond with their carving of the body of the lute. It stands freely upward from the legs that are on the bottom of the piece. All made from one solid piece of wood. Minor blemishes as are common with wood. The head on this instrument lost an ear long ago. There is a fresh chip on the top of the female figures head as shown in photos. Past that in very good condition. Still strums a tune. Measures approximately 41 1/2" tall.
