Extinct Female Helmeted Muskox Skull Fossil found in SW Iowa
Extinct Female Helmeted Muskox Skull Fossil found in SW Iowa. The Helmeted muskox also known as Harlan’s muskox or the woodland muskox. This species lived in the U.S. Midwest, including Iowa, during the late Pleistocene epoch. The helmeted muskox became extinct around 9,500 years ago, along with many other large Ice Age mammals. Female Muskox are far more rare than Male Muskox in the fossil record for some reason. Even finding a male skull is extremely rare where fossils are found. We are only aware of one other Female Muskox that is in better condition found in North America. This is the 1st of this species that has been offered for sale on a public auction. Found by Bobby McClarnon. This fossil measures 16 1/2" by 11 1/2" by 6 1/2" approximately. There has been no restoration work done to this fossil.
