Dogon Hand Carved Walu (Antelope) Wood Mask – Africa. Mid-Century or older. The Dogon Walu (Antelope) mask is a piece of art and cultural heritage from the Dogon people of Mali. These masks are traditionally used in the Dama ceremony, which is a final commemorative ritual for an important Dogon elder. During this ceremony, masked dancers perform to restore order to the world after the disruption caused by death. A mask similar to this one can be viewed online at the North Carolina Museum of Art. Mask is missing an ear as shown in photos. From the Chuck and Eileen Hoffman Collection. Chuck and his wife spent most of their lives teaching in various countries bringing back interesting and often old pieces from the cultures they shared their lives with.
