1864 Japanese Wood Block Print by Kunichika Kabooki of a Famous Actor Bando Shuka
This wood block print was made by Toyohara Kunichika and represents Bando Shuka as The Demon God Omatsu bando Mitsugoro. Toyohara Kunichika (1835–1900) was a renowned Japanese woodblock print artist, particularly famous for his yakusha-e (actor prints) depicting kabuki actors. Omatsu the Demon God, is a notable figure in Japanese kabuki theater. This character was famously portrayed by the actor Bando Shuka I (1813-1855) in the play "Shinpan koshi no shiranami" (New Edition of the Thieves Crossing Over) at the Ichimura Theater. Omatsu is depicted as a fierce and formidable character, often associated with supernatural strength and a commanding presence. A tag on the back of the support board suggests 1864. Very good condition with colors still vibrant. Age toning with minor faults as shown in photos. It measures 14 3/4" by 9 3/8"
