Pre-Columbian Mayan Polychrome Pottery Plate w/ Zoomorphic Painting 600-900 CE
Pre-Columbian Mayan Polychrome Pottery Plate. Late Classic. Portrays an animal spirit or companion or perhaps a portrayal of the legendary Chupacabra. Has traveling cracks from 3 sides that were secured with a glue. Glue holds in together now. Generally plates similar to this were ceremonially killed which doesn’t seem to be the case on this one. It was never completely broken. Likely developed cracks from time and the elements. This is a nice example of artistry found in the Late Classic 600 to 900 CE. Exhibits correct manufacture and excellent patination. Measures 10 1/2" Diameter and 1 3/4" height approximately. From the late Tom Moxley Collection.
Condition: Ancient Authentic
