Antique Syrian Marquetry Damascus Inlaid Wood & Mother of Pearl Hexagonal Occasional Table – 19th to Early 20th Century. A masterpiece this table is inlaid with various small sections of wood with shell inlay incorporated on the top made using a technique called marquetry. Patterns include geometric designs which include rectangles, squares, triangles and a pronounced star on the top. The art of marquetry in Damascus dates back over 700 years, with its origins attributed to a Syrian artisan named George Al-Bitar. The process involves cutting and arranging small, geometrically shaped pieces of wood and other materials to form beautiful, intricate patterns. These pieces are then inlaid into furniture and decorative items, creating stunning visual effects. For its age this piece is in excellent condition with only a couple minor faults noticed. There is a small damaged area just above the footing and a very minor ding on the underside of the table edge which is not easily noticed. All inlay sections appear intact with no missing mother of pearl or wood inlay missing past the small section above the one footing. A highly collectible piece. Given the amount of artistry that went in to this piece we looked very hard for faults. If we missed anything it is very minor. The table measures 31 3/4" by 14 3/4" approximately. Highly collectible piece of artistic home decor.
