Lot 133:
4 1/2" Pre-Columbian Mayan Quetzalcoatl Eccentric (Broke and Glued)
4 1/2" Pre-Columbian Mayan Quetzalcoatl Eccentric (Broke and Glued). Mayans believed in Quetzalcoatl, who was also known as Kukulkan. Quetzalcoatl, the Feathered Serpent, was a prominent figure in Mesoamerican mythology and was revered in Mayan culture. There are some variances in the depiction of Quetzalcoatl in ancient Mayan artistry. Capturing a depiction of this dragon like diety for a stone worker would have been no easy feat. This eccentric has the prominent high spot on the head with what appears to be a mane going down a long neck, top appendages represent the wings with two feet or arms toward the base and a tail pronounced out to symbolize the long tail feathers seen on Quetzalcoatl in Mayan art. Many of us see things in rocks and our imaginations go adrift. Many of these old eccentrics make us all stop and think about what the artist was trying to show us. This piece has been broken once and glued back together in the middle. It exhibits correct manufacture and excellent patination. Awesome restoration candidate.
