Native American Artifacts & Hot Wheels
Lot 138:
Pre-Columbian Stone Metate and Adz
Pre-Columbian Stone Metate and Adz from Central or South America. This Metate is highly developed. It has a nicely formed rim all around the edges that form a shallow bowl. The Adz was with it from the collection and seems a perfect fit and matched material type. The Adz has very nice usewear polish from countless hours of use by Native American that used it. Generally there is a mano with a metate so this one may have had a different purpose than turning corn to maize. The use of an adz form suggests crushing and chopping. The metate measures 6 3/4" by 3 7/8" by 1 3/4" The Adz is 4 1/2" long.
