Pre-Columbian Mayan Polychrome Pottery Plate w/ Zoomorphic Painting 600-900 CE
Pre-Columbian Mayan Polychrome Pottery Plate. Late Classic. Portrays an animal spirit or companion that resembles a Peccary or Tapir. Anciently repaired. Has 2 sets of holes that were used at one time to hold this plate together after it was broken in half. Glue holds in together now. The holes are drilled in a primitive fashion likely by flint drills with patination so the ancients tried to keep this one together to continue use. Generally plates similar to this were ceremonialy killed which doesnt seem to be the case on this one. This is a nice example of artistry found in the Late Classic 600 to 900 CE. Exhibits correct manufacture and excellent patination. Measures 11 3/4" Diameter and 1 5/8" height approximately. From the late Tom Moxley Collection.
Condition: Ancient Authentic
