19th Century Kurumba Metal Sheeted Antelope Mask Headdress - Adone Mask
Kurumba Antelope Mask, Headdress or Helmet – Aribinda, Burkina Faso. This mask was worn during major events including funerary rites. Highly detailed hand carved piece from what appears to be one solid piece of wood. Accented with decorated metal straps on the horns and covering most of the neck and down the snout. A line of hide with attached hair followed the center of the head down the back of the head at one time. There still exists a line of hair going down the center of the top of the skull from the snout. Red string patches are attached to the metal in places. There are holes in the back of the mask where it would have been worn which likely were where leather straps formed a harness. Inside the mask there are two holes that would have served to allow the wearer to see from the mask. The inside of the mask shows a fair amount of use wear. This is a very nice piece of old african artistry. Tribal masks this size rarely make it to this side of the world. The ears have been glued back on as shown in photos and this mask does have use wear and patina. 19th to early 20th century. From the Chuck and Eileen Hoffman Collection. Chuck and Eileen spent their lives as overseas school teachers and brought back momentos from their travels focusing on older cultural artifacts. It measures 58 3/4" by 22" by 7" approximately.
