Ancient African Bura Asinda Terracotta Grave Marker found in Niger or Burkina Faso 1000 to 1500 CE.. Nicely detailed piece exhibiting a large nose, other facial attributes and gender (male). Often these markers or as some call them urns do not express facial features. These are often found in that region of the world in different forms by farmers or construction crews clearing areas. Very little is known about the culture that made them. What has been found are large cemeteries with impressive necropoli, which provide evidence that this was a wealthy, complex society. They often topped burials with figures decorated with incised or stamped patterns like this one. Ex Chuck and Eileen Hoffman Collection. Chuck and Eileen spent many years mid to late century teaching in remote parts of Africa and returned home with momentos to remind them of their adventure.
