Proto-Historic Stone Cross Engraving found in Peru
Proto-Historic Engraved Stone Cross found in Peru. Catholicism was introduced to Peru in the 16th Century. This may also have been a form of Intaglio Seal used by early native Catholics in Peru. Material appears to be marble. It has a fair amount of patination so very likely a very early artifact made by the local inhabitants in Peru. This same material was used for thousands of years before Catholicism was introduced to Peru to make animal and other charms. Measures 1 1/8" by 1" and is 5/16" thick.
