18-19th Century 49" African Malinke Carved Wood Statue. Very tall Hand Carved Malinke Fertility Male Statue. Correct manufacture and age weathering of wood for its age. Excellent condition for its age. The Mandinka (Malinke) inhabit the West Sudanian savanna region, extending from The Gambia and Senegal to Mali, Guinea, and Guinea-Bissau. Between the 16th and 19th centuries, many Mandinka people were captured, enslaved, and shipped to the Americas, significantly influencing the African heritage of descended peoples in regions like Brazil and the Southern United States. A piece of the old world this statue has survived time as a reflection of the rich cultural tradition of masterful wood carving that has been a huge part of tribal life in Africa for centuries.
