Nicely Framed Old Copper Culture Artifact Assemblage from the Late John Grodey Collection found in North to Eastern Wisconsin. In his younger years John lived in Wisconsin and put this frame of prehistoric copper tools together. He hunted artifacts very hard throughout his life and likely found most if not all of the pieces in this frame. There is only writing on two of them. One reads Trout River which is located in Vilas County and another reads Salem or Salmon lake (hard to make out). This collection includes 5 bipointed awls with the largest of the awls measuring an impressive 6 1/4" The three larger awls are outstanding examples for the artifact type.; 14 Copper Arrow or Spear tips measuring 1 9/16" to 3 3/4". Some of the tips are hammered out flat while others are rolled copper.; One 7" copper knife; a fish effigy and hook. The fish effigy may also be a type of copper arrowhead but has the outline of a fish.; An oval shaped solid piece of copper that has the basic form of a plummet (can’t see any grooves so it may have had another use).; a copper needle and 2 rolled copper beads. Individually there are several pieces in this collection that have a good value amongst the copper artifact collectors around the Great Lakes Region where they are typically found. In total there are 27 pieces and the frame is included. The Old Copper Culture emerged at least 9,500 years ago in the Great Lakes region of North America. It peaked between 7,000 and 5,000 years ago when copper use began to decline. The pure, soft copper from the region produced implements that were not necessarily better than stone tools, except for copper awls which were more effective than bone awls. With a lack of usable stones for making their spear tips, knives and other tools in that part of North America they used the raw copper as a substitute. Artifact sizes range from 7/16" (copper bead) to 7" (copper knife). Frame measures 12" by 9" by 2 1/2".
