Saint George Slaying the Dragon Icon - Bulgarian Oil on Wood
Saint George Slaying the Dragon Icon – Oil on Wood. This is an older icon. Likely 1800’s to early 1900’s. In more recent decades icons have been certified by scholars tied to the church to ensure they are a proper representation of the depiction based on the church’s standards. This one has no certification and is visibly an older one representing George Slaying the Dragon. It does have 4 symbols, letters or numbers which we couldn’t make out on the edge of the painting (see photo). Paintings of historical religious figures fall under strict standards by the art community in Bulgaria and other countries. Sofia is Bulgaria’s center for art in the country. Excellent condition measuring 8 3/4" by 6 1/2" and 7/8" thick. From the Chuck and Eileen Hoffman. Chuck and Eileen spent their lives as teachers in foreign countries. Everywhere they went they collected items from the cultures they spent time with focusing on items that were old and significant.
