34" Extinct Eastern Elk Horn found in SW Iowa
27" Extinct Eastern Elk Horn found in SW Iowa. It washed out of a river bank where an ancient lake bed once stood. Where it was found many extinct species of fossils are found. The last reported live elk in Iowa was in 1871. What little that is known about this race of elk has been gleaned from remains and historical references. The length of the horn is approximately 27" and the two intact tines measure 15 1/2" and 17". The base of the main beam where it meets the skull is over 10 inches in diameter.
