Very Old 6 5/8" Buffalo Bone Knife Handle found in SW Iowa
Very Old 6 5/8" Buffalo Bone Knife Handle. These come in a variety of forms. This one has notches at the rim cut in to help lashings hold in tighter. They cut and chopped on the handle end with chert tools likely to give it a better grip for holding. This handle no doubt housed a good size blade at one time. Worked areas do not appear as chew marks would. Amateur fossil hunters these are often easy to miss or be dismissed as a broken bone so look at them closely before discarding. This piece exhibits good patination and is prehistoric. Guaranteed to carbon date 1700 AD to 10000 BC
