High End Native American Artifact Auction
Lot 267:
2 1/2" Hematite Rubbing/Dye Stone found in Saline County, Missouri by Jim Latimer
2 1/2" Hematite Rubbing/Dye Stone. Native Americans used hematite for dyes (red ochre). This stone was used heavily on all sides rubbing the hematite in to a powder. On the one side you can see where they were digging in to it with stone tools as well. Nice and interesting example.
