Squirrel Platform Pipe Made by the late Billy Guthrie Mid to late Century. Well known locally for his stone artistry Billy made platform pipes, birdstones, bar amulets and just about everything stone except arrowheads that the Indians have made over the past 10 thousand years. Although we do tend to use modern on pieces made like this there does come a point where they become vintage, historic or antique. The information stickers on the bottom of the piece are just made up info by a schiekster who tossed it on a sale, antique mall or show at a table to give it a false story which we still see regularly on modern made pieces. In the 1980’s a piece like this from Billy would have cost several hundred dollars and he was always sold out to various deceased and a hand full of artifact dealers still alive today. There was another maker that worked closely with Billy named Donnie Lemons who made pipes very similar to this one. His son is still alive to differentiate the two makers work. It is made of a very hard limestone and was dyed with the bark of a tree boiled(I can’t remember which tree). A natural dye that was used by native Americans to do the exact same thing to various things throughout prehistory. We arnt smokers but Billy was. This pipe is not just a work of art it is made to use and hasn’t been smoked since it was made decades ago.
