Lot 243:
4 1/8" Red Tiped Dalton (Broke & Glued) found in Pettis County, Missouri w/ COA
4 1/8" Red Tiped Dalton (Broke & Glued) found in Pettis County, Missouri w/ COA. From Arkansas to Iowa we see a good number of red tiped daltons. They are usually smaller. When the stone was a little tough the indians would lightly heat treat bladed down bifaces to allow them to more easily flake their blades without losing much tensil strength. When the stone was yellow or brown the outside of the blade would turn red so when they finished the dalton if they got close enough to the edge the point or blade would complete with a red tip and often with red ears if they kept the length of the stone when making it. This is an excellent example of one of those daltons. It is broken and glued in the middle as shown in the photos. Very nice study and display piece. Ex George Wolf Collection. Comes with a Roy Motley COA.
