High End Native American Artifact Auction
Lot 302:
23" Extinct Eastern Elk Horn found in SW Iowa
23" Extinct Eastern Elk Horn found in SW Iowa. This Elk Shed would have worked for a tool or weapon for ancient native Americans. It washed out of a river bank where an ancient lake bed once stood. Where it was found many extinct species of fossils are found. The last reported live elk in Iowa was in 1871. What little that is known about this race of elk has been gleaned from remains and historical references. It measures 23" w/ the long intact tine measuring approximately 11". The base of the antlers where they met the skull is approx 3 1/2" This was likely a shed lost by the animal as it does not appear to have been attached to the skull or any skull bone remnents.
